INFERTILITY AND ITS TREATMENT

Almost every couple's greatest wish is to expand the happy home they have established with children. However, as it is known, although this is an important decision, it is also a self-sacrificing journey. Besides the pleasant moments of this journey, difficulties may also be experienced from time to time. The issue of infertility is one of the difficulties we mentioned. It is important to be aware of infertility and act together with the doctor. Infertility is the inability of couples who have had regular and unprotected sexual intercourse for about a year to become pregnant. Couples in this situation should consult a gynecologist without delay. For couples aged 35 and over, this period is 6 months.

With the developing medical technology, infertility treatments, which are assisted reproductive treatments, are widely used and successful results are achieved. At the same time, there were no difficulties during the application for couples. The doctor and the couple decide together on the treatment method appropriate to the couple's examination and test results, and treatment is started.

The most important issue in assisted reproductive treatments is the correct diagnosis and method. In infertility treatments, the easiest and most economical treatment methods are applied first, and if no response is obtained from these methods, increasingly more difficult treatment is started. Below you can find assisted reproductive treatments ranging from easy to difficult;

Infertility Treatment Methods

Ovulation Treatment: If problems with ovulation can be solved, ovulation development can be monitored and medications that can stimulate ovulation can be used. Aim; is to obtain more than one egg. During this process, the development of the eggs is monitored using ultrasound. Once the eggs develop to the desired size, injections are given to aid in ovulation and the couple must engage in sexual intercourse. This treatment method is the first treatment option for couples with ovulation problems. In procedures performed with ovulation treatment, pregnancy can be achieved at a rate of 15-20% if the sperm count is within normal limits.

Insemination Treatment: It is a method applied to couples who cannot conceive naturally. Taking sperm samples and dropping them into the uterus is called the insemination method. IUI treatment is a treatment method recommended for couples who have defects in their sperm cells, infertility problems that have no medical explanation, and couples who have not achieved results with ovulation treatment. Since insemination treatment is more economical and easier than in vitro fertilization treatment, couples who have not received results from ovulation treatment are given insemination treatment before in vitro fertilization treatment. In the insemination treatment, ovulation treatment is first applied to the expectant mother. 36 hours after the ovulation injection at the end of the treatment, a sperm sample is taken from the expectant father under laboratory conditions, and the sperm cells with the highest chance of fertilization are selected from this sperm sample and transferred to the expectant mother's uterus. The main purpose of insemination treatment is to increase the quality of the sperm and to shorten the path of the sperm by transferring it into the uterus. With this method, sperms reach the egg in an easier and shorter way. In the insemination method, the chance of pregnancy increases proportionally according to the sperm quality. The chance of success in vaccination treatment is 20%. If the number of motile sperm taken from the sperm sample is below 10 million, the chance of pregnancy decreases. If pregnancy has not been achieved after 3 insemination treatments, in vitro fertilization treatment is recommended.

In Vitro Fertilization Treatment: In Vitro Fertilization treatment; It is a treatment method that provides the most effective and successful results provided by the developing medical technology in the field of gynecology. In vitro fertilization treatment is recommended for couples who cannot achieve pregnancy with ovulation and insemination treatment. Although it is a more difficult method than other assisted reproductive treatments in terms of cost and difficulty of application, the success rate is 30%. In in vitro fertilization treatment; Egg cells are taken from the expectant mother and sperm cells are taken from the expectant father. These egg and sperm cells are combined and fertilized in a laboratory environment. The embryo formed as a result of this fertilization is placed in the uterus of the expectant mother. The treatment duration is approximately 20 days. However, this period may vary from patient to patient. Some conditions are needed to achieve pregnancy with in vitro fertilization treatment. The age of the expectant mother, egg quality, as well as the sperm quality of the expectant father are important factors that affect the success outcome. Other important factors for the success of in vitro fertilization treatment are; The expectant mother's psychology is healthy and she receives emotional support from the expectant father. Türkiye competes with many developed countries in terms of success in in vitro fertilization treatment.
